Simplicity is key

In University I took a graphic design course which required us, the students, to design an editorial layout of a mock magazine. My Tuesday afternoons were often spent showing up those office hours to get feedback on my design of the week.

Attempt at minimalism

Tuesday rolled around and I was in his office again. I sat quietly in his office looking around until he had completely reviewed the work I had completed. He wasn't a man of too many words. Then he looked up and said, "You have the type of room that is completely filled, don't you? I bet there isn't a single space that doesn't have something in it." I laughed and agreed. He was right. He politely told me to give my designs some space. It's the thing called minimalism. I should try it.

That was one of the best pieces of advice I had received that year. I realized I felt the need to have to fill and crowd my frames. Often, they were just too busy. This was a piece of advice I could apply to my life too! I didn't completely clean out my room and donate everything I owned the next day, but I did leave a little more space for simplicity.
